How to use acids in your skincare routine

Adding acids to your daily skin care routine will give you a radiant complexion. In fact, using acids is a great way to make your skin smooth and even, while also fighting against skin aging. But it's important to use acids correctly without overloading your skin. So we take you step by step to smooth skin.

What exactly are acids?

Acids are powerful ingredients that help create the best version of your skin. They work effectively and help reduce skin aging and tackle hyperpigmentation and acne. Well-known acids include glycolic acid, retinol and salicylic acid.

Getting started with acids

Did you know that gradually building up acids is essential? Because they are so effective, your skin needs some time to get used to them. So we recommend starting slowly. Start by using them once a week and then, gradually, build up to two to three times a week depending on your skin type.

The most common acids are retinol, salicylic acid and glycolic acid. We'll walk you through these ingredients and how to use products containing them.

Pipet gevuld met retinol (vitamine A)

Retinol

Retinol, also known as vitamin A acid, is an absolute multitasker. Best known for its anti-aging properties, it also effectively addresses hyperpigmentation and acne. This is because retinol stimulates cell renewal in the skin, removing dead skin cells and making way for new, smooth skin. So expect a powerful boost in reducing fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation and blemishes. But that's not all: retinol also induces collagen production, which gives you a youthful appearance. In fact, collagen is a natural protein in our body that is responsible for the elasticity and firmness of our skin. So if you are looking for tight and supple skin, retinol is definitely a must! Retinol makes the skin more sensitive to sunlight. Therefore, our advice is to use retinol only in the evening. Want to add retinol to your routine? Then starting with a night cream with retinol is a good first step.

Salicyl acid

Salicylic acid is a natural compound found mainly in the bark of willow trees and is used as an anti-inflammatory. In addition, salicylic acid is often used in skin care, such as as part of a peel. Applying an acid to your skin can sound a bit frightening, but not to worry, salicylic acid is actually very mild and even has a soothing and anti-inflammatory effect on the skin. It is therefore an ideal ingredient for various skin types, especially sensitive skin. Do you suffer from acne and/or blackheads? Then you should definitely try salicylic acid!

Pipet gevuld met glycolzuur

Glycol acid

Glycolic acid, also known as alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), is a fruit acid that is essential for skin renewal. It removes dead skin cells and gives your skin a surprising glow immediately after use, as if you just gave your face a thorough scrubbing. With its ability to reduce hyperpigmentation, soften fine lines and refine skin texture, glycolic acid offers a healthy and radiant appearance. This powerful ingredient is perfect for addressing both incipient hyperpigmentation and skin aging.
