NikkieTutorials tells: seven tips for enjoying the sun safely.

And still we are enjoying wonderful summer weather! We flock to the beach and have a drink on the terrace to pick up as much sunshine as possible. Earlier I gave tips for sexy summer proof legs, but safety first! Therefore, today 7 tips to enjoy the sun safely and optimally.

Why is safe tanning so important?

The sun has many benefits. A healthy dose of vitamin D makes me and everyone around me cheerful and happy. Moreover, I love the summer temperatures and a healthy complexion. But the sun does not have only benefits, which is why it is important to take some measures. Without these measures, the UV-A and UV-B rays harm the skin. The skin ages faster, burns earlier and you are at greater long-term risk for skin cancer, among other things.

Enjoy the sun, but do it safely!

Tip 1: Sun safely, don't sun all day

The strength of the sun changes throughout the day. In the morning and from late afternoon you can sunbathe most safely. Between noon and 3 p.m. the sun's strength is strongest, it is best to seek a spot in the shade then.

Tip 2: Avoid direct sunlight

It is a persistent misconception that you only get a tan when you stay full in the sun all day. Think long term and go for quality rather than quantity. Sit under an umbrella at the hottest time of the day or enjoy a siesta!

Tip 3: Drink plenty of water

And I don't just mean wine and cocktails (sorry!). After a day in the sun, you quickly dry out and come home with a headache. You can easily prevent this by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. This also reduces the chances of getting a nasty sunburn.

Tip 4: Choose the right sunscreen

It may sound like an open door, but the right sunscreen is essential. Which sunscreen is best depends on your skin type. For example, someone with dark skin needs very different protection than someone with very light skin. Basically, you can adhere to the following:

A good sunscreen not only suits your skin type well, but also protects against both UV-B and UV-A rays.

There are different types of sun protection on the market. Often you can choose between a spreadable cream or a spray. Personally, I like to choose a spray. This is because it soaks into the skin much faster.

Tip 5: Apply properly

Found the right sunscreen? Apply or spray it! This seems easy, but following the instructions is very important. If you don't do this, chances are you won't achieve the specified SPF. What is generous? At least 1 teaspoon for the face and neck, 1 teaspoon for the torso, 1 teaspoon for the arms and 2 teaspoons for the legs. This seems like a lot, but trust me: you don't want to skimp on this.

Whatever sunscreen you choose, whatever brand or factor, keep rubbing yourself in. Guideline here is every two hours anyway, but also after every dip in the water. This also applies to waterproof and water-resistant sun protection. Swimming, drying off and perspiring will cause you to lose a lot of sunscreen anyway.

Tip 6: Use aftersun

At the end of a day in the sun, it's great to use an aftersun cream. It makes my skin feel cool, relaxed and cared for because it restores moisture to my skin and slows down peeling. In addition, it helps me maintain my summer tan longer.

Tip 7: And last but not least, eye and head protection is also important.

Remember the skin under your hair, especially if you have short hair. Wear a beautiful summer hat or cap to protect yourself from sunburn and sunstroke. Also, for your eyes, it is essential not only to have a beautiful pair of sunglasses but also to ensure that they have a UV filter to protect your eyes. Hats and glasses are also super fashionable, so there is no reason to skip this tip.

Keep the summer coming!

I'm ready for it. Are you going to enjoy the sun this weekend like me? Could you make sure your skin is optimally protected? Beautiful, healthy skin is essential. So take good care of it!

Good luck, and enjoy the beautiful weather!
